The Big List of One-Handed Vertical Trill Charts

Notable or recommended SOUND VOLTEX charts featuring one-handed vertical trills of alternating BT and FX button chips

Last Updated: Sep 2022

Vertical trills of alternating BT and FX chips can be a tricky pattern to get used to, since it requires moving your fingers or wrists in a different way to most other button patterns. The pattern becomes much more common from level 18s onward.

Here are a bunch of charts that feature vertical trills, sorted by trill speed.

Note that "one-handed" is used here to differentiate from patterns such as the ending of Bangin' Burst GRV / ЯeviveR, or the middle of MixxioN which is usually done two-handed. Alternating BT/FX walls, such as 伐折羅-vajra-, also aren't included.

αρχη (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 120
Notes per second: 8
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

The holds here complicate things, but thankfully Arche is slow. Overall the chart is a tech chart, as one might expect from NOX. This is almost like a slower version of 逆月 MXM (which is not included in this list).

怪盗Fの台本~消えたダイヤの謎~ (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 128
Notes per second: 8.53
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Kaitou F is another NOX tech chart which is more notable for a pattern later on in the chart. However the above pattern, which also reappears later in the chart with modifications, can be quite tricky if you're not as good at polyrhythmic buttons.

Celestial stinger (GRV 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 259
Notes per second: 8.63
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Celestial stinger has this pattern twice. Paying attention to both the knob slams and the changing BTs at the same time can be tricky.

すきなことだけでいいです (MXM 16)

Vertical trill-ness: ★☆☆☆☆
BPM: 140
Notes per second: 9.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

The vertical trills here aren't that significant, but ones of this length are rare for a level 16 so I've included it here.

Vampire's Territory (EXH 17)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 280 (whole song is 140-280)
Notes per second: 9.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Vampire's Territory is a u-z song that has a number of vertical trill patterns here and there, the main one being above. For this song the slow part is at the start.

Katharsis (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★★★
BPM: 280 (whole song is 140-280)
Notes per second: 9.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Katharsis takes the vertical trill style of charting from Vampire's Territory and Ghost Trigger and ups it a notch. The trills here all polyrhythmic, which can make them quite tricky even though they're not particularly fast. The slow part for this song is at the very end.

cloud (HVN 17)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 143
Notes per second: 9.53
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

cloud has some one-handed trills that change BTs during the trill. The chart as a whole is a bit of a tech chart.

真夏の海の修道女 (MXM 17)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 145
Notes per second: 9.67
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

This chart has quite a lot of vertical trills for both hands – some short, some a bit longer.

V (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★★☆
BPM: 150
Notes per second: 10
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

V as a whole is pretty trill heavy, to the point that its perceived difficulty is skillset-dependent. The ending in particular makes heavy use of vertical trills on both hands.

デストロイマーチ (EXH 16)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★★★
BPM: 155
Notes per second: 10.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Destroy March is possibly the best intro chart for practicing vertical trills. In addition to the above section there are also a bunch of shorter trills throughout the chart.

SUPER SUMMER SALE (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 155
Notes per second: 10.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

SUPER SUMMER SALE is a different sort of chart for each difficulty, and for MXM it's a cross-hand and laser tech chart with a lot of one-handed trills. The right column above reappears mirrored later on in the chart, so this is good one-hand practice for both hands.

ΩVERSOUL (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 155
Notes per second: 10.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

ΩVERSOUL has quite a number of vertical trills towards the end here, including one that crosses over to the other side partway. The chart is overall quite hard to score on for a level 18.

Fly far bounce (MXM 17)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 163
Notes per second: 10.87
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

This is one of the more annoying vertical trills in the game, since there's a speed change right on the first note. This section is also at the very end of the song, making it a real destroyer of PUC runs.

CLAMARE (MXM 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★☆☆☆☆
BPM: 224
Notes per second: 11.2
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

CLAMARE has a rare example of a cross-handed vertical trill, where the left hand transitions from a C hold into an R+D trill. It's also possible to use your right hand for the trill and cross-hand the knob instead.

V.I.P. (HVN 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 169
Notes per second: 11.27
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

V.I.P. has a whole bunch of short vertical trills here. Overall it's quite a hard buttons 18.

Line 4 Ruin -kohumix- (MXM 17)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 170
Notes per second: 11.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

This chart has a lot of mini vertical trills in a number of places, some of which are in the THE凸GENERATOR-like section seen on the left. Overall this chart is one of the hardest 17s.

Across the Starlight (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 170
Notes per second: 11.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Across the Starlight mixes some normal BT trills and BT holds in with the vertical trills, which makes things tricky, but thankfully the trills aren't that fast.

魔境堕天録サリエル (HVN 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★★☆
BPM: 176
Notes per second: 11.73
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Sariel has a lot of button tech that makes use of constant FX chips on the beat between BT chip patterns. Not all of them are straight trills, but this section at the very beginning is rather trill heavy.

Angels and Demons (EXH 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★★★
BPM: 177
Notes per second: 11.8
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Vertical trills are a running theme throughout the chart, with the section above being the longest. As such, it's a very good chart to practice vertical trills on once you've gotten used to デストロイマーチ.

Historia of Velnoti (VVD 17)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 180
Notes per second: 12
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

This chart has quite a lot of short vertical trill bursts throughout, only some of which are pictured above.

HAELE III ~Angel Worlds~ (GRV 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 185
Notes per second: 12.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

HAELE's ending has a number of different short vertical trills, including some on both hands.

Legendary Road (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 248
Notes per second: 12.4
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Legendary Road has a slam + trill section here similar to Celestial stinger, though they're triplets here. The chart overall is quite hard to score for a level 18.

THE WORLD REVOLVING (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 190
Notes per second: 12.67
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

THE WORLD REVOLVING is a general earth power chart with a steady rhythm and not much in terms of breaks. Part of this steady rhythm includes the above trill section.

Calamity Tempest (MXM 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 194
Notes per second: 12.93
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Calamity Tempest has a unique sort of vertical trill here, where there's an extra BT-C at every second BT note. Some players hit this one-handed, other players two-hand this.

VΛZiLiSQ (MXM 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 199
Notes per second: 13.27
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

VΛZiLiSQ is on the easier end of the 19s for scoring, but the two vertical trills at the start here can be a barrier when going for S if you're just starting out with Lv19 S's.

NEO TREASON (GRV 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★☆☆☆☆
BPM: 200
Notes per second: 13.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

NEO TREASON has a long trill towards the end of the song here, which wouldn't be significant if it wasn't for the fact that it's one of the faster Lv18 trills at this length.

Quietus Ray (HVN 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 200
Notes per second: 13.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Quietus has the above and also one more trill at the ending. These are pretty simple though when compared to the rest of the chart.

Fiat Lux (XCD 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 200
Notes per second: 13.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Fiat Lux here is a bit different – it's not really one long vertical trill, but it sure feels similar to one. This sort of pattern happens twice in the chart, and it's quite fast and tricky to read.

Restless Waitress (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 206
Notes per second: 13.73
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Restless Waitress has a number of short trill bursts throughout, including some into BT holds like the one above. In general though the chart is a confusing knob tech chart.

ΑΩ (GRV 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★☆☆☆☆
BPM: 208
Notes per second: 13.86
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

ΑΩ has a rather fast and long trill near the beginning of the chart here.

ΣmbryØ (MXM 20)

Vertical trill-ness: ★☆☆☆☆
BPM: 220
Notes per second: 14.67
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Being a boss song, ΣmbryØ casually throws in a fast vertical trill at the start of the chart here.

XyHATTE (EXH 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★☆☆☆☆
BPM: 222
Notes per second: 14.8
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Vertical trills appear in the middle of BT chip streams twice in XyHATTE. They're fast, but thankfully they're short. Because the lead-in and lead-outs are both on right hand BTs, it is actually possible to bring your left hand in to hit the FXs.

Invitation from Mr.C (XCD 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 230
Notes per second: 15.33
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

This is really more of a cross-hand button pattern than a vertical trill pattern, but it's getting listed here anyway.

The presumed intended way is, e.g. for the patterns in the leftmost column, to hit the trill with your right hand and then hit BT-D with your left hand crossing over. Other players have come up with different strategies though, including splitting up the trill (hitting the first L→A with right hand and the second L→A with left hand) or using a thumb for the BTs.

祝福の色彩は想い結ぶ君たち迄 (MXM 18)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 235
Notes per second: 15.67
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

This trill comes right as the speedup finishes, which can make it tricky to time, especially given how fast it is. It's possible to take this trill with two hands though.

There is another similar but shorter trill towards the end of the chart, as well as a slow vertical trill on both hands earlier in the chart.

FLügeL《Λrp:ΣggyØ》(GRV 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 240 (whole song is 120-240)
Notes per second: 16
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

FLügeL's trill is both fast and long, and since it comes at the very end of the song after a very long stream of stairs it can really tank one's gauge at the last minute. Overall the song can be quite hard to score on, and the slow parts of the chart don't help.

Last Resort (MXM 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★☆☆☆
BPM: 252
Notes per second: 16.8
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

Last Resort's trill is actually faster than FLügeL's, but is slightly shorter. But unlike FLügeL, it's possible to take this with two hands.

THE凸GENERATOR (MXM 19)

Vertical trill-ness: ★★★☆☆
BPM: 255
Notes per second: 17
Links: YouTube (DDX), sdvx.in

THE凸GENERATOR's trills are short, but they're fast and made complicated by the knob slams. This makes them quite tricky to hit accurately.
